The rumor started with a post that began circulating claiming that the company was preparing to kill Gmail later this year. The manipulated image made the rounds on social media platforms, including X (formerly Twitter) and TikTok. Some reports claim that it started from the TikTok app. Some of these articles claimed that Google was shutting down Gmail after receiving all the backlash related to Gemini image generation.
“After years of connecting millions of people around the world, enabling seamless communication, and fostering countless connections, Gmail’s journey is coming to an end,” the post reads. “As of August 1, 2024, Gmail will officially cease, marking the end of its service. This means that Gmail will no longer support sending, receiving, or storing emails,” it added .
