Advani, who led the BJP's national revival
Born in Karachi on November 8, 1927, Advani joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) at the age of 14. In 1947, he and his family migrated to India after Partition.
Advani joined the Bharatiya Jana Sangh in 1951, when it was founded by Syama Prasad Mookerjee. He entered the Rajya Sabha in 1970 and was elected party president two years later. During the Emergency of 1975, he and his party colleague Atal Bihari Vajpayee were arrested.
When the Janata Party government was formed under the leadership of Morarji Desai in 1977, Advani was appointed Minister of Information and Broadcasting. In 1980, he became one of the founding members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Advani is credited with leading the BJP's rise from just two seats in the 1984 general elections to national prominence in the 1990s. His leadership role in the Ram Janmabhoomi movement to build a Ram temple in Ayodhya boosted the BJP's vote share.
He was the BJP president for three terms. Later, Advani served as Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led NDA government at the Centre.
He was nominated as the BJP candidate for the post of Prime Minister in the 2009 general elections. However, the party failed to win the elections.
