Badminton News: The withdrawal of independent women’s singles player Goh Jin Wei from the 2022 Malaysia Games Championship (Sukma) has widened the competition.
Penang native Goh Jin Wei, who was considered the favorite for gold, has withdrawn from participating in the India International Challenge starting tomorrow.
Penang team manager Razlan Rajan Abdullah has confirmed the 22-year-old’s absence.
“Jin Wei has decided to leave Sukma. He chose to participate in the India International Challenge,” Razlan said.
While Jin Wei’s decision to withdraw from the competition dealt a blow to the island nation’s hopes, it opened the door for players like Perak’s Eoon Qi Xuan and Selangor’s Siti Nurshuhaini Azman to go for gold.
Qi Xuan, however, didn’t have high expectations as he wasn’t 100% fit.
“I haven’t fully recovered from my knee injury. I had minor surgery on both knees earlier this year and I’m still working on getting back to full fitness. As such, I haven’t set any goals. specific goals for this soul and I will only give my best,” Qi Xuan said.
The 21-year-old won a bronze medal in the individual event and a silver in the team event in the last edition of 2018 in his home country.
After Sukma, Qi Xuan will turn to the Indonesian Masters in Malang from October 18-23.
“I hope my knee will recover soon and I can be fit for the next tournaments,” Qi Xuan said.
