Badminton News: The withdrawal of independent women’s singles player Goh Jin Wei from the Malaysia Games 2022 Championship (Sukma) has made the competition wide open.
Goh Jin Wei of Penang, considered the favorite for gold, has withdrawn to compete in the India International Challenge starting tomorrow.
Penang team manager Razlan Rajan Abdullah has confirmed the 22-year-old’s absence.
“Jin Wei has decided to leave Sukma. He chose to participate in the India International Challenge,” Razlan said.
While Jin Wei’s decision to withdraw from the competition dealt a blow to the island nation’s hopes, it opened the door for players like Eoon Qi Xuan of Perak and Siti Nurshuhaini Azman of Selangor to fight for the gold.
Qi Xuan, however, didn’t have high expectations as he wasn’t 100% fit.
“I haven’t fully recovered from my knee injury. I had minor surgery on both knees earlier this year and am still trying to get back to full fitness. So, I didn’t set a specific goal for this soul and would only do my best,” Qi Xuan said.
The 21-year-old won an individual bronze and a team silver at the last edition of 2018 in his home country.
After Sukma, Qi Xuan will turn to the Indonesian Masters in Malang from October 18-23.
“I wish my knee a speedy recovery and I can be fit for the next tournaments,” said Qi Xuan.
