This event was opened directly by the then President of India, Zail Singh. The main venue used during the 1982 Asian Games was the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, located in the city of Delhi.
This event was held for the first time under the auspices of the Asian Olympic Committee (OCA). A total of 3,411 athletes from 33 countries participated in the 1982 Asian Games. The number of sports competed in this event were 23 sports and 196 events. Two exhibition sports will also be competed in this event, namely Kabaddi and Sepak Takraw.
This event also marks the debut of several new sports. These include horse riding, golf, handball, rowing and field hockey for women.
At the 1982 Asian Games, many record-breaking events were held. A total of 74 Asian and previous Asian Games records were broken in this event.
A total of 614 medals were up for grabs at the 1982 Asian Games. This total was divided into 199 gold medals, 200 silver medals and 215 bronze medals.
China also started showing its dominance in the Asian Games at this event. They overturned the dominance of Japan, which had managed to win the previous eight Asian Games.
The Bamboo Curtain country became the overall champion of the 1982 Asian Games with a total of 153 medals. In fact, this figure is the same as that of Japan which ranks second.
However, China was superior in winning gold medals, namely 61 gold, 51 silver and 41 bronze. Meanwhile, Japan only got 57 gold, 52 silver and 44 bronze medals.
Indonesia itself managed to finish in ninth position in the medal standings. The Red and White contingent collected 15 medals including four gold, four silver and seven bronze.
Badminton and tennis are the sports that contribute to Indonesia's gold medals. Badminton won two gold medals thanks to Icuk Sugiarto/Christian Hadinata (men's doubles) and Christian Hadinata/Ivana Lie in the mixed doubles sector. Tennis also brought two gold medals, notably thanks to Justedjo Tarik (men's singles) and the men's team composed of; Hadiman, Justedjo Tarik, Donald Wailan-Walalangi, Tintus Wibowo.
The 1982 Asian Games also introduced color television broadcasts to India for the first time. The 1982 Olympic mascot was Appu, a baby elephant known in local history as “Kuttinarayanan”.
