First case of death from monkeypox in India

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – India confirms the death of monkey pox the first on Monday, August 1, 2022. The patient is a 22-year-old man who lives in the southern state of Kerala.

The full identity of the man has not been released, it is only known that he died on Saturday July 30, 2022. The Kerala state tax minister told reporters that authorities had isolated 21 people . close contact with him.

“The man (the monkeypox patient) arrived in Kerala on July 21 but did not come to the hospital until July 26 when he showed (symptoms of) fatigue and fever,” said said Minister K Rajan.

Rajan added that there is no reason to panic despite coming into contact with monkeypox patients as long as they are asymptomatic.

Kerala Health Minister Veena George told reporters on Sunday July 31, 2022 that the family of the deceased monkeypox patient had reported to local authorities earlier that he had tested positive for monkeypox in the United Arab Emirates before return to India.

Federal Ministry of Health India do not want to comment on the death due to monkey pox. The ministry only said it had set up a task force, made up of a number of senior officials to monitor monkeypox cases in the country. Local media in India have reported at least five monkeypox infections in India.

Overall, this is the fourth known death from monkeypox to date. Earlier last week, Spain reported two monkeypox-related deaths and the first in Brazil. The death in India is also the first in Asia.

The WHO declared the monkeypox outbreak a global health emergency on July 23, 2022. The WHO said late last month that 78 countries had reported cases of monkeypox with more than 18,000 cases, the majority of which are found in Europe.
