Fajar/Rian resign, this Indian double rises to 1st rank in the BWF

Jakarta: Indian men’s doubles stalwarts Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty are certain to take the place of Indonesian men’s doubles stalwarts Fajar Alfian and Rian Ardianto from world number 1 in the BWF rankings.

Satwiksairaj/Chirag rise to first place in the new BWFupdates on Tuesday October 10, 2023.

Satwiksairaj/Chirag’s success in reaching world number one cannot be separated from their success in winning the gold medal at the 2022 Asian Games.

In the final match, they defeated South Korean representatives Choi Sol-gyu/Kim Won-ho (Korea) in straight sets 18-21 and 16-21 in 56 minutes.

This feat also made history as it was the first time that India won a gold medal at the Asian Games in the men’s doubles sector and also the first time that an Indian representative was ranked 1st in the BWF in the men’s doubles event.

Not a single Indonesian representative brought a medal

The 2023 Asian Games presents a poor record for Indonesian badminton, which has always been at the top, especially in the men’s doubles event.

Previously, Indonesia had always managed to win the Asian Games gold medal in the men’s doubles event. Marcus Fernaldi Gideon/Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo (2018), Mohammad Ahsan/Hendra Setiawan (2014) and Markis Kido/Hendra Setiawan (2010) won gold medals at the Asian Games.

However, for these Asian Games, Indonesia posted disappointing results in badminton. In fact, not a single Indonesian representative brought a medal.
