Swaraj Dweep, known as Havelock Island in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, will host one of the most anticipated meetings of the G20 presidency on Saturday afternoon.
Spread over an area of 92.2 square kilometers and with a population of 5,500, Swaraj Dweep is a two and a half hour sea voyage from Port Blair by government and private vessels. As Swaraj Dweep is known for its beautiful beaches, G20 India Coordinator Harsh Vardhan Shringla and G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant organized a yoga session for around 40 delegates from different countries on Saturday morning at Kala Bhattar beach.
The beach is almost 13 km from the private hotel where they are staying. The delegation, including British High Commissioner to India Alex Ellis, Russian Ambassador Denis Alibov, German Ambassador Dr B Ackermann, Australian High Commissioner to India Barry O’Farrell and others reached the island at the mobile prison in the port at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Blair, the senior official said.
They visited the cell where freedom fighter VT Savarkar was held. On Saturday morning around 6am, the delegates went to Kala Buttar beach and did yoga.
After the session, they work on cleaning the beach. When the rally begins, they will meet at the hotel party around 1 p.m., he said.
The session will continue until 4:00 p.m. and participants will likely cover a wide range of areas, including culture and tourism, climate finance, circular economy, global food security, energy security, green hydrogen, disaster risk reduction and resilience, development cooperation, education, trade. Capability mapping, fight against economic crime and multilateral reforms, the official said.
After the meeting, delegates will be taken to Radhanagar beach to watch the sunset, he said.
On Sunday, the delegation will depart Port Blair on a charter flight at 12:30 p.m. They will reach Delhi’s IGI airport around 4 p.m.
Shringla has previously said, “The Andamans are important. At the G20 summit in Bali, Prime Minister Narendra Modi told Indonesian President Joko Widodo that the two countries were 90 nautical miles apart, not 90 nautical miles. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are very close to Indonesia. So this is the meeting place. Symbolic.”
Earlier this month, at the Bali summit, Indonesia handed over the G20 presidency for the coming year to India.
The G20 or Group of 20 is an intergovernmental forum of the world’s major developed and developing economies.
Local residents welcomed the initiative of the Center to organize meetings in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, saying that such an event would contribute to the development of the islands.
