Badminton News: The greatest success comes after its greatest disappointment. That’s the positive view from men’s doubles specialist Chirag Shetty as he doesn’t want to think about their painful 1-3 loss in the mixed doubles final to Malaysia on Tuesday.
Chirag and partner Satwiksairaj Rankireddy considered Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik too hot to handle as they lost their opening game and the loss rocked the team as India ultimately lost their title defense.
“Difficult to take but the team did their best and gave it their all. Now is the time to focus on the individual events. Come on, Indian team, let’s go,” Chirag wrote on social media.
Chirag is now like a wounded tiger ready to pounce in the ongoing individual competition. Chirag-Satwiksairaj was seeded second and earned a first-round bye.
Their first real challenge will likely be in the semi-finals, either against impromptu Malaysian pair Chan Peng Soon/Tan Kian Meng or Adam Hall/Dunn Alexander of Scotland.
Barring distractions, they will meet top seeds Aaron/Wooi Yik in the final.
World number 7 pair Chirag-Satwiksairaj, who played a big part in the success of the Thomas Cup in India in May, are eager to go further in the individual events after losing to England’s Marcus Ellis/Chris Langridge in final at the 2018 Gold Coast.
A gold medal in the individual events will surely give them a boost ahead of the World Championships in Tokyo from August 21-28.
Others who will be aiming for a gold medal for India in the individual events are men’s duo Lakshya Send and Kidambi Srikanth and PV Sindhu (women’s singles).
