Sports League – F1 News: Williams says it is not bothered by the fourth position in the constructors' standings now occupied by close rivals Force India, who prefer to focus on track performance rather than their rivals.
Williams does not want to make the mistake of obsessing over Force India in the fight for fourth place in the constructors' championship.
The Grove-based team are currently battling it out with their fierce Silverstone-based rivals in the race for the millions of pounds in commercial prize money at the event.
But even though the duel between the two teams will last until the end of the season, Williams team principal Rob Smedley believes it would be a big mistake if his team were only thinking about how to beat Force India.
“We just have to get the best possible result,” said Smedley, whose team currently sits three points ahead of Force India.
“When it comes to Force India, we see them as just as normal as any other team. They're not obsessed with anything, including performance – not at all.
“Obviously we want to finish the season before them, but we also want to finish the season before all the other teams – so it's not an obsession.
“We are aware that on this track (Marina Bay Circuit) they have a better chance, since what they did to their car in Spain.
“So we could have been there with them in qualifying – if only there hadn't been a yellow flag. But despite that, we're pretty happy and not making a fuss about Force India.”
Despite the increasingly tense situation between the two teams towards the end of this season, Smedley insists his team's relaxed attitude towards their rivals must not change – even if beating Force India is the only way to secure a place in the constructors' standings. The best way, he says, is to focus on getting the best results on track, rather than focusing on the opposing team.
