This week, Europe 1 paints portraits of artists who have achieved success, but only in their countries. For this fourth episode, head to India to meet Kunal Kamra. A famous comedian of a new generation, known for not having his tongue in his pocket.
This Thursday, in a series of artists who are stars only in their country, Europe 1 takes you to India to discover a 34-year-old young comedian enjoying immense success. Kunal Kamra is the new darling of the younger generation. For him, freedom of expression has no boundaries.
One of the country’s stars
“I decided to stop political humor, it was no use. On leaving the event a fan told me he would continue to vote for Narendra Modi just for me to keep laughing at him. Do you want political humor? Hope gives life. After all, there is hope for democracy in India”, launched the comedian onto the stage. Second-degree sarcasm and aloofness… These are the hallmarks of Kunal Kamra, a humorist who can help understand Indian politics.
In India, stand-up is very successful and Kunal Kamra is one of the country’s stars. The videos were viewed millions of times, as did this 28 year old fan. “His humor is bold and based on current events. Unlike other comedians in India, he is not afraid to talk about politics and make fun of the party,” he explains.
Loved by the younger generation, loathed by the ruling Hindu nationalists
Hated by ruling Hindu nationalists, Kunal Kamra was banned from air travel for two years, but he is still revered by new generations. Sometimes he makes fun of restaurants that claim to be pure vegetarians. Of course, it’s better to know a bit of the country to understand his jokes which are sometimes in Hindi. Hence her success is 99% Indian, although she is currently touring Australia and Singapore, where many Indians are based.
