The 34-year-old man is accused of urinating, while drunk, on a 72-year-old woman who was installed in business class during a flight on Nov. 26 between New York and New Delhi.
The incident was dubbed “pipigate” by local media. A former senior executive at US bank Wells Fargo was released on bail Tuesday after spending several weeks in prison for allegedly urinating on his neighbor on an Air India flight. Shankart Mishra, the banking giant’s vice president for operations in India, was arrested in January.
Acts “absolutely disgusting and disgusting”
The 34-year-old man is accused of urinating, while drunk, on a 72-year-old woman who was installed in business class during a flight on Nov. 26 between New York and New Delhi. A court in the Indian capital has ordered Shankart Mishra’s release on 100,000 rupees ($1,200) bail, contrary to a lower court ruling which called the act “absolutely abhorrent and abhorrent”. Shankart Mishra denied the charges against him and his lawyers told the court that the woman, an Indian classical dancer, had actually urinated on herself.
Fired by his employer
Respondent was banned from flying with Air India for four months and was immediately fired by Wells Fargo when the allegations against him became public. Indian company Air India was fined 37,000 dollars (about 34,000 euros) for managing this incident. India’s civil aviation regulator has also imposed a fine of 300,000 rupees (about 3,400 euros) on Air India’s director of in-flight services. Meanwhile the aviation pilot saw his license suspended for three months for “failing in his duties” to ensure safety and discipline on board.
