Draupadhi Murmu officially became the first indigenous female president of India and the second woman to hold the post.
“In my capacity as returning officer, I declare Draupadi Murmu President of India,” returning officer PCMody said after the election, as quoted by One India.
Murmu was officially elected President of India on Thursday (7/21) after winning the vote.
In the voting process, Murmu won with 64% of the votes beating his rival Yashwant Sinha who got 36% of the votes.
Murmu garnered the votes of a total of 2,824 voters, including 540 MPs. Meanwhile, Sinha received the votes of 1,877 voters, including 208 MPs in the election.
Among the states, Murmu got the most votes from Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh, while Sinha’s tally was highest in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu.
All Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) of Andhra Pradesh and Sikkim voted in favor of Murmu, while in Arunachal Pradesh he secured the votes of all but four legislators and all but one in Nagaland.
While Sinha did not get a single vote from the Andhra Pradesh, Nagaland and Sikkim assemblies.
Murmu also got the maximum vote of an MP and the least in Kerala where he only got one vote.
