Under new National Medical Commission (NMC) regulations, the government has made it mandatory for physicians to obtain a unique identification number (UID) in order to practice in the country.
The UID is issued to physicians by the Commission’s Ethics and Medical Registration Committee. Physicians must register with the National Medical Register (NMR) in order to be licensed to practice medicine in India.
According to a statement from the Official Gazette, the national register will contain all entries of registered doctors from all state registers maintained by the state medical associations.
The license to practice medicine granted to a registered doctor is valid for a period of five years. Thereafter, the doctor must renew the license to practice medicine by filing an application with the State Medical Council, the new rules entitled “Registration of Doctors”. and License to Practice Medicines Ordinance, 2023′ state.
The application for renewal of the license can be made before the expiry of three months after the expiry of the license.
The National Medical Register is made available to the public on the National Medical Commission website. This contains, among other things, a doctor’s data, including name, date of registration, medical qualifications, university, place of work and specialty.
To obtain a license, physicians were asked to apply through an Ethics & Medical Registration Board web portal that included the information provided in electronic format.
“The State Medical Council must satisfy itself and consider the application for a license to practice medicine in this state after levying a fee within 30 days,” the government says.
The unique identification number is appended with a code of the particular state or union territory chosen by the doctor.
In order to transfer licensure to practice from one state to another, the regulations require a State Medical Council-registered physician wishing to practice medicine in another state to submit an application to the state through the Ethics web portal & Medical Registration Authority.
All existing physicians on the Indian Medical Register or the State Medical Register who do not have the registration number pursuant to these regulations are required to update the registration number within a period of three months from the posting of these regulations on the Ethics & Medical Registration Board web portal must be obtained once, and the license so created is valid for a period of five years from the date of issue, the statement said.
“Any person who has passed the proficiency test of any university or medical institution in India for the issue of a recognized medical qualification is eligible for provisional registration for the purpose of internship training and to apply for provisional registration with the relevant State Medical Council,” it said .
