How to celebrate Diwali and perform Lakshmi Puja
On the day of Diwali, the main event is Lakshmi Puja. However, Diwali is celebrated in different ways and flavors across India.
In many parts of India, people get up early in the morning and take a bath – known as Ganga Snan. The puja altar is set up and lamps are lit. New clothes, coins, gold jewelry, sweets and other offerings are placed in front of the altar.
Mantras of Lord Ganesh, Lakshmi and Vishnu are chanted. After the puja, people wear new clothes, eat sweets and treat themselves to crackers. Usually crackers are lit during the day and fireworks are reserved for the late evening hours. However, there are some local regulations regarding the use of crackers that must be followed.
On Diwali, Lakshmi Puja is performed in the evening after sunset. Prepare the main altar in your puja room. Put up the images or idols of Ganesh and Lakshmi. Decorate them with flowers, sandalwood paste and vermilion. Light lamp and incense sticks. Put some coins and gold on a plate and place it in front of the altar. Chant the names, slokas and songs of Ganesh and Lakshmi. Offer the deities the special dishes prepared for the puja including modak, halwa, puri, kheer and others. Do arati and finish the puja. Distribute the prasad to family members and other participants.
