JAKARTA – When Queen Elizabeth II dead, we often hear if British Commonwealth of Nations also expressed condolences to the Queen. So what is meant by the Commonwealth of Nations?
Launched from the Royal United Kingdom, the Commonwealth of Nations is a union of countries that have always been under British rule. Each of these countries develops and reflects the different circumstances of each region.
After gaining independence from British rule, India became the first country to decide to remain in the Commonwealth. Even so, India is still a republic.

To pursue this goal, the London Declaration of 1949 recognized King George VI as Head of the Commonwealth. After his death, Commonwealth leaders recognized Queen Elizabeth II as his successor.

The role of the head of the Commonwealth is in fact not hereditary. However, Commonwealth leaders unanimously decided in 2018 that King Charles III would continue to lead the Commonwealth after the death of Queen Elizabeth.

As reported on the Commonwealth website, the aims of the British Commonwealth are:
– Protect the environment and promote the sustainable use of natural resources on land and at sea
– Increase trade and economy
– Support democracy, governance and the rule of law
– Community and youth development, including gender equality, education, health and sports
– Supporting small countries, helping them to overcome the specific challenges they face.
