China’s defense minister threatens to conquer Taiwan
China’s defense minister threatens to carry out a military conquest of Taiwan. Before the start of the security conference, General Li, at a meeting with Singapore Defense Minister Ng Eng Hen, said China aimed for peaceful “reunification” but would not allow Taipei’s ruling Progressive Party (DPP) to seek independence.
“We will never promise not to use force,” he was quoted as saying by Chinese state media. “China must unite.” China’s leadership will firmly defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity, the general said.
China considers the democratic island republics to be part of the People’s Republic. However, Taiwan, which currently has a population of 23 million, has had independent rule for more than seven decades. After Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, there were fears that China could use similar force against Taiwan.
The United States has committed to the island’s ability to defend itself, which so far has primarily meant arms deliveries. US President Joe Biden has promised to use US troops to assist Taiwan in the event of a Chinese attack.
The Austin Pentagon boss has asked his Chinese counterpart to meet on the sidelines of the conference. However, the Chinese side refused. One contentious point is that the US imposed sanctions on the general in 2018, which Beijing has asked to lift. In any case, there has been largely radio silence between the two countries, as relations have fallen to rock bottom.
