The 9 people arrested are linked to the company responsible for maintaining the bridge. They are being investigated for manslaughter, senior police officer Ashok Kumar Yadav said in a statement.

local television Zee News reported that more than 400 people were on the bridge at the time and plunged into the Machchu River.

As we know, the historic 230 meter long bridge was built during British rule in the 19th century. The bridge was closed for renovations for six months and reopened to the public last week.

The century-old suspension bridge is believed to have collapsed as it could not support the weight of the many people on the bridge at the same time.
