Police in India are looking for three men in connection with the death of a family from Gujarat who tried to travel to the United States by boat via Akwesasne, a Mohawk community located between Quebec, Ontario and New York state, in March.
The police department alleges the men were involved in running an immigration business that used people to enter the country with fake documents.
Four Indian nationals whose remains are among eight recovered from the St. Lawrence came to Canada on a tourist visa from the state of Gujarat. They are the father, Praveen Chaudhari, 50; the mother, Daksha, 45 years old; their daughter, Vidhi, 23; and their son, Meet, 20.
Achal Tyagi, superintendent of police in the city of Mehsana, Gujarat, said authorities had issued search notices for three people: Nikulsinh Vihol, Sachin Vihol and Arjunsinh Chavda.
They face criminal charges for homicide that did not constitute homicide, breach of trust, fraud and dishonest inducement to surrender property and conspiracy.
Mr Tyagi said a police complaint had been filed against the men and the case was still in the early stages of investigation. According to the complaint translated by The Canadian Press, at least one of the men lives in Canada.
The other four people who died were members of a Romanian family in the Toronto area who fled after receiving an eviction order. They have been identified as Florin Iordache, his wife Cristina (Monalisa) Zenaida Iordache, and their Canadian-born children, two-year-old daughter Evelin and one-year-old son Elyen.
