World football association FIFA will host the next World Cup in Qatar. A lot of people don’t like that.
One reason is the controversial stadium construction. The World Cup was postponed to winter because it was too hot in summer to host matches there. The 2022 World Cup matches will be played at eight stadiums: Al Bayt Stadium, Al Rayyan Stadium, Al Thumama Stadium, Al Janoub Stadium, Khalifa International Stadium, Lusail Icon Stadium, Education City Stadium, Ras Abu Aboud Stadium.
In fact, the stadium was only built for the World Cup. Ras Abu Aboud Stadium in Doha, right on the Gulf Coast, was the first stadium to be built – to be demolished soon after the match. It is built from 974 recycled shipping containers. This number is the symbol for Qatar’s international dialing code.
The workers who work there are guest workers from countries like Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Philippines or Pakistan. At the end of the construction work, angry people remained against the construction, which has killed at least 15,000 people over a ten-year period.
