The CPI, the second largest coalition partner of the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) in Kerala, on Saturday took issue with social media platforms that claimed to be pro-Left but were found to be linked to anti-social activities, including gold smuggling.
The party said its role was no less important in the setbacks the left movement has suffered in recent times.
In a strongly worded statement, CPI state secretary Binoy Viswam said the realisation that those who claim to be the protectors of the Left movement are in reality the guardians of the underworld is something that Left sympathisers cannot tolerate.
He said that left movements can only regain the trust of the people if they deliberately keep their distance.
The communist movement has the responsibility to do justice to the thousands of people who trusted it, he added.
Viswam's statement comes in the wake of allegations surfacing against several leaders of the ruling CPI(M) in Kannur and their alleged links with anti-social elements involved in gold smuggling and other illegal activities and media accounts social services that they manage.
