Badminton News: Soh Wooi Yik has found a new spirit to get rid of doubts. Too many disappointments with the recent Indonesia Open, but Wooi Yik knows the wait for his first Open title will soon be over if his improving form at Istora Senayan is any indication. Wooi Yik gave one of his best performances but still wasn’t good enough.
“I still believe that God has a reason for me to go through all this,” Wooi Yik said after losing in the final at Istora Senayan in Jakarta on Sunday.
World champion Wooi Yik-Aaron lost in back-to-back matches 17-21, 18-21 to India’s strong pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy/Chirag Shetty. It was their first loss in nine meetings against the world number 6 pair.
“We played too defensively and not aggressive enough,” admits Wooi Yik.
“I’m sorry we couldn’t award the title, but actually I consider it a good start for us. From the loss in the first round to the final, Aaron and I have improved. If you know it, you’ll know what happens next.”
It was the second time they lost a final this year after the Indian Open in January, but they bounced back after losing in the first rounds of four tournaments (German Open, All-England, Open Switzerland and Asian Championships) before reaching the semi-finals at the Singapore Open last week.
In Indonesia, the duo defeated former All-England champions Shohibul Fikri/Bagas Maulana of Indonesia, German Open champions Choi Sol-gyu-Kim Won-ho of Korea, Akiro Koga/Taichi Saito of Japan and another Indonesian pair Pramudya Kusumawardana-Yeremia Rambitan to reach the final.
Soh Wooi Yik and Aaron will compete in the Korea Open from July 18-23, the Japan Open from July 25-30 and the Australian Open from August 1-6.
“It will work again, but I promise to come back stronger and surprise everyone and even those who doubt us,” Soh Wooi Yik said.
“We are improving step by step and we will continue to work harder to win our first World Tour title.”
Aaron was disappointed that he couldn’t hold his own when the Indian pair came back into the game.
“We were too rushed and not calm enough when our opponents tried to defend in the first match,” Aaron said in the match interview with SPOTV.
“We were ahead but they scored six points in a row which affected our momentum. It’s quite disappointing that we couldn’t win the title after being so close. However, we will keep trying. until we win our first Open title,” he stressed.
