Badminton News: National women’s singles coach James Chua wants Kisona Selvaduray to work on her strength after recently finishing in the last eight of Vietnam Open 2022.
He reached his first quarter-final since March before being eliminated by co-hosts Thi Phuong Tran 19-21, 7-21.
James, who started coaching the 24-year-old in July, admits he still needs to improve certain aspects of his game to continue developing.
“He’s still in the process. His performance at the Vietnam Open was okay but his body wasn’t strong enough in the quarter-finals after he had to go through two tough matches in the first two rounds. So he still needed to train his strength. I also think he needs to improve his skills on the pitch,” James said.
Kisona was pushed to three games in the first and second half against India’s Anupama Uhadyaya and Myanmar’s Thet Thuzar.
The 2019 Philippines SEA Games gold medalist has seen injuries hamper his progress since and needs a boost.
He had won the Spain International last year but has been in decline since then. Kisona had reached the quarter-finals of the Swiss Open in March, but has failed to make it past the first round of any of her tournaments since before the Vietnam Open.
Despite running out of steam in the last eight games in Vietnam, Kisona is feeling more positive after climbing three steps to No. 1.46 from No. 49 in the latest World Rankings list.
James wants his team to slowly regain their confidence as they look to the upcoming Indonesia International Challenge (October 11-16) and Indonesia Masters (October 18-23).
“I hope he can perform better in Indonesia than in Vietnam, but I don’t want to put too much pressure on him. Instead, I want him to just focus on playing and winning rounds. after lap,” concluded James.
