China and India withdraw troops from disputed border

In an effort to defuse tensions to avoid border wars like in 1962, Beijing also confirmed the decision ahead of a meeting in Uzbekistan next week to be attended by Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.


India’s Foreign Ministry said Chinese and Indian troops would start withdrawing from the Gogra-Hot Spring region in Ladakh, west of the Himalayas, on Thursday (8/9). This step will be completed early next week.


“Both sides agreed to de-escalate forward deployments in this direction in a phased, coordinated and verifiable manner, following which forces of both sides returned to their respective territories,” the Indian Ministry of Ministry spokesman said. He added that in accordance with the military agreement, the two countries would demolish the temporary buildings in the border area.


Although details of the deal were not disclosed to the public. But according to military experts, the two neighbors appear to have built a buffer between their troops and stopped patrolling.


“It’s a positive step, a head-to-head scenario is being avoided,” said Rakesh Sharma, a retired Indian lieutenant general who had served in Ladakh.


After deadly clashes in June 2020 that killed 20 Indian soldiers and four Chinese soldiers. Buffer agreements have also been implemented in several regions of Ladakh, where each country has its troops stationed.


But Sharma said troops from both countries were still on hand, at least at one of the locations in the Demchok region of Ladakh. Something that can be discussed further.
