Badminton News: Four-time badminton national champion B. Chetan Anand is pleased with his team’s performance in the last three major events, namely India Open, Syed Modi International and Odisha Open 2022.

“I’m happy that the players are slowly making an impact. There are still a few things to work on, but one thing is for sure, they have the talent to succeed,” Chetan said in conversation. with ‘Sportstar’ on Monday, a day after Smit Toshniwal reached the final of the Odisha 2022. Open.

“Yeah, Smit was brilliant. He had joined our Academy (Chetan Anand Badminton Academy) just two months earlier, and we had been working on various aspects of his game,” said Chetan, who has the career-high No. 10 World ranking.

“He has movement on the court, a good game at the net but lacks confidence and takes too much pressure. Since I was there at the Odisha Open, I told him to relax and get out and enjoying the game,” said the 41-year-old three-time SAF Games gold medalist.

Unnati, 14, won the Odisha Open to become the youngest women’s singles champion, while Kiran George stopped Priyanshu for the men’s singles title.

“In fact, Smit had a high fever before the event and couldn’t even train. Obviously he has a game to look forward to,” said Chetan, who leads CABA’s coaching staff with his wife and former international Sarada Govardhini.

“To be honest, all the hard work over the past three years since we established CABA has paid off. What is important is that even during the pandemic when everything is closed, we place most of the trainees in the Academy itself to ensure continuous training. I think it helps them,” he said.

“I feel that most of these talented young players lose focus in the middle of the game. We will work on that too,” added Chetan.

For the record, at the Syed Modi Open earlier this month, G. Srivedya/T. Hema Nagendra Babu reached the mixed doubles final and Srivedya, and Ishika Jaiswal lost in the semi-finals in a tight three-game match at the Odisha Open 2022 women’s doubles.

For someone who was a racquet performer in his prime, Chetan Anand isn’t to blame for dreaming big.

“Yes, the end goal is to produce Olympic medalists from our Academy (CABA). I know there is still a long way to go, but this result has certainly instilled a lot of confidence in the support staff too, because there is a group of players who can succeed at the highest level.”
