Badminton News: Malaysia’s Cheah Liek Hou is thrilled after winning his ninth consecutive title at the Bahrain International Para Badminton Tournament in Manama last Sunday.
He was also happy to win the doubles title with his new partner Mohd Fareez Anuar yesterday.
“I am happy to win my ninth consecutive individual title. This time too was even better because I also managed to win the doubles title with Fareez,” said Liek Hou.
The Tokyo 2020 Paralympic gold medalist is now seeking more attention as he sets his sights on the Dubai Para Badminton International which kicks off on Tuesday.
“I want to break my own record and make history,” added Liek Hou.
Yesterday in the SU5 men’s singles final, Cheah Liek Hou needed just 24 minutes to beat Polish player Bartlomiej Mroz 21-7, 21-12.
The 34-year-old veteran then teamed with Fareez to upset men’s doubles seeds Chirag Baretha/Raj Kumar of India through a tight 14-21, 21-19, 21-7 rubber match.
Liek Hou is now unbeaten in 49 men’s singles matches since losing to Indonesian player Suryo Nugroho in the 2019 China Para Badminton International final.
Liek Hou is also looking forward to the prospect of playing doubles at the next tournament with newcomer Mohd Fareez Anuar with whom he won the doubles in Bahrain.
However, Fareez will need to be cleared by tournament doctors to continue playing on the circuit and the Malaysian will be tested again in Dubai.
If Fareez gets approval and is certified to play in the tournament by the International Paralympic Council (IPC), Liek Hou said Malaysia may have other quality players who can do well on the Paralympic circuit.
“For now, doubles is not part of the Paralympic Games, but we can play in the Paralympic World Championships, Asian and Asean Paralympic Games,” Liek Hou said.
