Causes of knee pain when going up and down stairs and squatting, according to expert

Bisnis.com, JAKARTA – It is increasingly common for young people between the ages of 25 and 35 to complain of knee pain, especially when going up and down stairs, getting up from a chair, squatting or kneeling and drive long distances.

Launching from The Times of India on Wednesday (14/12/2022), Dr. Raghu Nagaraj, Director-Orthopaedic and Joint Replacement Surgeon, Fortis Hospital, Cunningham Road, Bangalore, says: “This is usually caused by a condition called chondromalacia of the patella (patella bone).

This is due to various causes such as tight muscles, muscle weakness and especially in the quadriceps and hamstrings, which lead to a tilted position of the patella and thus increase the frictional force between the femur and the patella.

Causes of knee pain

This condition is becoming more prevalent due to lack of physical activity among young people due to home working conditions that involve sitting for long periods of time and also due to excessively strenuous physical activity without warming up and stretching appropriate in the case of fitness enthusiasts. .

This can be avoided mainly by doing regular exercises for the knee joints which mainly involve stretching, strengthening and conditioning exercises for the quadriceps, hamstrings and gluteal muscles.

“Knee problems can also be seen in young adults when they suddenly start exercising and their muscles aren’t ready due to a lack of flexibility. The knee is the hardest part of the body. vulnerable because the whole weight of the body falls on it. Therefore, any type of strenuous activity causes pain in the knees and joints,” said Dr. Narayan Hulse, Director – Department of Orthopaedics, Bone and Joint Surgery, FortisHospital.

Apart from this, bone fractures can also cause this condition. Additionally, another cause of knee pain is a tear in the meniscus (shock absorber) in the knee, which usually occurs due to physical activities such as sports or running.

Why do my knees hurt when going up and down stairs?

Dr Hulse explains: “A group of conditions can cause knee pain, particularly when going up and down stairs. During normal walking, body weight is supported primarily by the thigh (femur) and lower leg (tibia) bones. However, when climbing stairs, the weight of the body must be supported by the knee joints, which are bent at an ever-changing angle.

When climbing stairs, a leverage mechanism occurs and therefore the effective force applied to the front of the knee joint can be 2-3 times the body weight. This is when the patella is subjected to enormous pressure.

The patella is a small bony part located at the level of the knee, just before the knee joint. The role of the patella is to support the leg for movement and standing, reducing pressure on the knee joint and the cartilage covering the bones of the joint

Therefore, any condition that affects the kneecap can cause pain on stairs.

“The muscles around the knee are going to spasm because the inner thigh muscles are weak, they are going to pull the kneecap to the side. This inflexible knee protection mechanism makes the knees and joints sore from a sudden exertion. Also, few hear a crack during sudden knee movements and have difficulty sitting down and getting up. No one is going to focus on the inner thighs while exercising,” says Dr. Hulse

Knee pain treatment

A common condition that affects it is called chondromalacia, or weakening of the cartilage due to degeneration, trauma, or sports injuries. In this condition, the cartilage, a cushion-like material, is abruptly detached from the bone and begins to rub against the femur. This can be diagnosed by clinical examination.

Some patients may require an X-ray or MRI, but most are treated with simple medications and exercises. If the pain is severe, you may need keyhole surgery, cartilage grafting, or the very rare partial knee replacement.

To avoid self-pain, a person should start by warming up slowly and moving on to other physical activities. It is also important to give the muscles enough time to develop muscle memory. This makes the muscles ready for future physical activity.

After exercise or exercise, cooling down and stretching are also important because the muscles have spasms. However, people with a medical history such as torn ligaments or knee joint injuries should consult a doctor before beginning any exercise or physical activity.
