Badminton News: Indian men’s singles badminton star HS Prannoy managed to beat Malaysian representative Lee Zii Jia with a score of 21-16, 21-23, 23-21 to secure a place in the semi-finals of the 2023 Asian Games individual tournament held in Hangzhou, China on Thursday (05/10).
India’s top-ranked men’s singles player HS Prannoy started the match strong by comfortably winning the first set 21-16.
The Indian ace was close to finishing the match in the second game, but former All England champion Lee Zii Jia came back to force the match in the third and final game by winning the second game 21-23 .
However, Prannoy remained calm in the final match and won the decider to secure a medal in the individual event of the 2023 Asian Games quadrennial continental championship.
Prannoy’s medal will be only the second medal for the Indian badminton contingent in the men’s singles event at the Asian Games, after badminton legend Syed Modi’s bronze in 1998.
Last week, the Indian men’s team also made history for the first time by winning a silver medal after reaching the final before losing to hosts China by a close score of 2 -3, with Prannoy missing the main match due to injury.
The Indian team still has representatives who will face each other in the quarter-finals, namely the world number 3 pair of men’s doubles, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy/Chirag Shetty, who will only appear this evening at Hangzhou time.
