NEW DELHI: The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) has expressed grave concern over flooded roads across Delhi and has urged the Lieutenant Governor to conduct a technical inspection of sewage and drainage systems.
The business association called for a timely investigation into the huge expenditures expended by MCD, DJB and NDMC on Delhi’s drainage and sewage system in recent years.
“It is important to find out what the money was spent on. Then why did the streets of Delhi become rivers in just two rainy days?” said CAIT Secretary General Praveen Khandelwal
“If the entire city were flooded after just two days of heavy rain, it’s hard to imagine how bad Delhi will be during the monsoon. We request that the LG deal with this issue immediately and take immediate action. Due to the rain, Delhi markets suffered major losses as water seeped into shops and basements, damaging goods. The Delhi government should immediately compensate the traders for the losses caused by the negligence of the government agencies,” Khandelwal said.
Flooding caused major inconvenience to traders in many markets.
“The water flooded the shops and caused damage to our goods. Drainage blockage made the problem worse,” said Swaran Singh, secretary-general of the All Delhi Computer Traders Association.
He added that the DDA has promised to address the problem of waterlogging and implement stormwater conservation measures, including building a robust drainage system and 12 stormwater harvesting structures.
“However, these were not implemented. Furthermore, despite the DDA’s modification of underground sewers, traders did not receive any relief,” Singh said.
