Bangladeshi smugglers attacked BSF jawans near a border post in Baharampur sector of West Bengal with sharp weapons on Friday night.
According to a BSF statement issued on Saturday, the jawans of the 73rd battalion were on duty when one of them was targeted by smugglers using sharp weapons and sticks.
Jawan dared the smugglers to stop, but they ignored his warnings and forcibly crossed the border and entered India. Their accomplices from the Indian side also rushed towards the jawan.
In retaliation, the jawan fired two shots, forcing the smugglers to flee to Bangladesh, while their Indian accomplices fled into the dense crop fields.
During a subsequent search supervised by the commander, sharp weapons were found at the scene.
Similar attacks have taken place recently on the South Bengal border, including an incident at the Kaijuri border post, 102nd Battalion, where a woman constable was attacked by seven smugglers.
Following the incident, the BSF recently held a meeting with the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) to strongly protest against the unprovoked attacks by Bangladeshi smugglers.
