A “new stage” open to Brics. The group of developing countries, consisting of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, will welcome six new member countries from January, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa announced on Thursday. Iran, Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates join the five major countries currently meeting in Johannesburg, on the occasion of the 15th summit which will end in the evening.
“Membership is valid from January 1, 2024”, said the head of state in a press conference with the leaders of the five countries in the current bloc. Chinese President Xi Jinping, whose country represents an economic heavyweight in the bloc, welcomed this “historic enlargement”estimate a “bright future for Brics countries”.
Soon after the announcement, Tehran said hello on X (formerly Twitter) “historic developments and strategic successes in foreign policy” from that country. Ethiopian Prime Minister, Abiy Ahmed, welcomed this “big moment” for African countries, while the United Arab Emirates also welcomes their integration, as President Mohammed bin Zayed said “respect the vision of Brics leaders”.
