Body of Indian soldier found after 38 years of disappearance

The corpse of a soldier India who disappeared 38 years ago on a glacier on the disputed border with Pakistanifinally found.

News agency report AFPOn Wednesday (8/17/2022), an Indian Army unit tweeted an image of Chander Shekhar’s coffin wrapped in the Indian flag on Wednesday morning local time, two days after India marked its 75th anniversary of the ‘independence.

Army India states that Shekhar was deployed for Operation Meghdoot in 1984 when India and Pakistan fought a brief battle for control of the Siachen Glacier, recognized as the world’s highest battlefield.

At over 18,000 feet (5,486 meters) with temperatures that can drop to minus 50 degrees Celsius (minus 58 Fahrenheit), Siachen is one of the toughest military deployments in the world.

Located in the Ladakh region of the Himalayas, Siachen has long been disputed between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.

Local media reported that Shekhar was among a group of 20 people who were caught in an ice storm while on patrol.

According to local media, fifteen bodies were found at the time but five others could not be found, including Shekhar.

The Indian soldier’s funeral will now be held with the utmost military respect in the state of Uttarakhand, where his family resides.

Her daughter, who was four when she disappeared, said the family has now been revealed.

“He is long gone… Dad came but I hope he is still alive,” he told the Hindustan Times daily.

Decades after the first battle for Siachen, India and Pakistani continued to maintain a military presence in this very remote region.
