If elected, Murmu will become president of the first ethnic society
REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BHUBANESWAR – India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has nominated female politicians from ethnic communities as presidential candidates. veteran politician Draupadhi Murmu held leadership positions in Odisha State.
Observers say Murmu will almost certainly win. Indeed, the party led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has the majority in parliament and Murmu also enjoys the support of other parties.

In his Tuesday (6/21/2022) evening tweet, Modi said that Murmu “has dedicated his life to serving the community and empowering the poor, oppressed and marginalized”, he then announced his name as presidential candidate.
“I am sure he will be a great president for our nation,” Modi said.
If elected, Murmu will become president of India’s first ethnic society and second female president. Opposition parties say they support Yashwant Sinha as a presidential candidate. Sinha is a former government finance minister BJP before defecting.
The Indian constitution provides only a ceremonial role for the president. The Prime Minister and the Cabinet with executive powers.
But the president’s role is important during political crises, such as when election results are not unanimous. It will decide which party is best placed to form the federal government.
