Badminton News: Team India made an incredible comeback to defeat strong Hong Kong 3-2 to advance to the semi-finals of the 2023 Asian Mixed Team Championships and secure the first medal of the continental tournament on Friday (17/ 2) evening at the Dubai Exhibition Centre.
In the opener, mixed doubles Ishaan Bhatnagar and Tanisha Crasto struggled before losing 24-26 17-21 to Lee Chun Hei Reginald and Tsz Yau NG to give Hong Kong a 1-0 lead.
2022 Commonwealth Games champion and world number 11 Lakshya Sen squandered a game advantage to lose to Hong Kong world number 14 Angus Ng Ka Long in an hour and 10 minutes with the scores 22-20, 19 -21 and 18-21.
Men’s doubles duo Dhruv Kapila and Chirag Shetty returned a point to Team India with victory over Hong Kong representatives Tang Chun Man/Yeung Shing Choi through a close battle at 20-22, 21 -16, 21 -11.
In women’s singles, double Olympic medalist PV Sindhu had to work hard to beat Saloni Samirbhai Mehta of Hong Kong 16-21, 21-7, 21-9 to tie the score at 2-2.
In the deciding match, Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand defeated Tsz Yau NG and Wing Yung NG 21-13 21-12 to ensure India’s victory over Hong Kong became 3-2.
