Bajaj Auto looks at high-end electric motorcycles

“We’re also in talks with KTM (and) there’s a joint effort where we’re looking at platforms for high-end electric motorcycles,” said Rakesh Sharma, executive director of Bajaj Auto, while responding to a question during the results review the first quarter responded to media briefing.

Bajaj Auto said Tuesday it is exploring platforms for high-end electric motorcycles with its Austrian premium bike partner KTM.

The company also said it is taking a balanced and calibrated approach to the geographic expansion of its Chetak e-scooter.

“We’re also in talks with KTM (and) there’s a joint effort where we’re looking at platforms for high-end electric motorcycles,” said Rakesh Sharma, executive director of Bajaj Auto, while responding to a question during the results review the first quarter responded to media briefing.

Sharma said the plan is “certainly on our radar screen and it will be announced at the right time”.

For the Chetak electric scooter, he said volumes are expected to be better than the first quarter, which recorded 6,200 units compared to 300 units in the March quarter of the previous fiscal year.

“Hopefully it will be double or nearly double what it was in the first quarter depending on supply chain visibility,” Sharma said.

In contrast to the business that is already in place, we are very cautious about calibrating the expansion of our geographic footprint, he said.

Total bookings for the vehicle currently top 16,000, he said.

The e-Chetak is currently available in 27 cities, which Bajaj Auto says it wants to bring to 100 cities.

He said the festive season last year was satisfactory and is expected to be decent this year unless inflation comes into play.
