Badminton News: PV Sindhu enjoyed a wonderful start to her return from injury as she led India to a stunning 3-2 victory over top seeds China in the women's team event at the Asian Team Championships. The 2019 world champion has been out since last October with a knee injury and made his first appearance of the year in a team meeting.
However, world number 11 PV Sindhu showed no signs of fatigue in her match against world number 8 Han Yue and scored an impressive 21-17, 21-15 victory to give her team a perfect start in their Group W clash at the World Championship. Setia Alam Convention Center yesterday.
Buoyed by PV Sindhu's victory, the women's doubles pair of world No. 23 Treesa Jolly / Gayatri Gopichand fought hard to beat world No. 22 Li Yijing / Luo Xumin 10-21, 21-18, 21-17 in front of Anmol Kharb, 17 years old. scored an impressive victory by defeating Wu Luoyu 22-20, 14-21 and 21-18.
Ashwini Ponnappa/Tanisha Crasto (doubles) and Ashmita Chaliha (singles) have already lost to Liu Shengshu-Tan Ning and Wang Zhiyi respectively.
China had opted to leave out the likes of world champion Chen Yufei and world number one doubles duo Chen Qingchen-Jia Yifan, but it was still a commendable victory for India.
“I am happy that I won today (yesterday) to give my team a point,” said 28-year-old Sindhu.
“I'm really excited to play here in my first tournament of the year. It was difficult for me because I got injured last October when I was starting to get back to my best form.”
“It obviously hurts a lot, but I have to continue to believe in myself. It was great to come back today and win my first match.
India were confident of a quarter-final berth with China even before the tournament began, as the two were the only teams in their group.
Now, Sindhu and her teammates are seeded in tomorrow's round of 16 and will avoid the other group winners.
The quarter-final draw will take place today after all group matches have been completed.
