Indian athletes displayed both courage and greatness in an extraordinary performance at the 19th edition of the Asian Games in Hangzhou, China. With an astonishing haul of 107 medals, India’s 655 representatives surpassed their own previous record set in Jakarta in 2018.
India’s impressive tally – consisting of 28 gold, 38 silver and 41 bronze medals – surpassed the 70 medals secured by the smaller 570-athlete team four years ago.
As the frontrunner in the medal table, China secured a whopping 200 gold medals, followed by Japan and South Korea. India’s contribution was significant considering only four nations crossed the 100-medal mark in Hangzhou.
India’s shooters stole the limelight and bagged 22 medals, seven of which shimmered in gold. Athletics also had its heyday, especially when Neeraj Chopra defended his javelin throwing title. In total, the athletics events brought India six gold, 14 silver and nine bronze medals.
Archery proved to be another standout performance for India as the compound team bagged all five available gold medals in its category. The cricket and kabaddi contingents kept the gold rush alive with two players each, while the men’s ice hockey triumph not only brought home gold but also secured a coveted spot for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy’s win in badminton marked India’s first men’s doubles gold win at the Games. The gold medal was rounded out by victories in squash, tennis and equestrian events. Indian cricket teams, men and women, won two gold medals.
But it wasn’t just about the medals. Hangzhou was a gateway to the 2024 Paris Olympics, offering 74 odds across various sports. India won six of them, with boxing coming out on top. Nikhat Zareen, Preeti Pawar, Parveen Hooda and Lovlina Borgohain have bought their tickets to Paris. Athletics and men’s hockey contributed to the ratings, ensuring strong Indian representation in the French capital.
