When they heard their son’s voice begging them to pay the money, they panicked. But it is a clone generated by artificial intelligence.
Easy scam to set up
American media reported several similar stories, but most importantly, the simplicity with which it is now possible to perfectly clone or imitate voices to create frauds. Once too expensive for the general public, software for making clones is now easily accessible and sometimes free. It only takes a few seconds of voice recording to do this.
In the face of this resurgence of scams, several companies with voice cloning software have decided to act, such as Eleven Labs.
