Badminton News: Young French player Arnaud Merkle triumphs at the Challenge International de Nantes 2023 in an inspiring comeback after the surgery he underwent.
Arnaud Merkle, one of the best French badminton players on the European circuit, won the coveted title at the Nantes International Challenge. After a difficult six-month recovery from hip surgery, Merkle’s triumphant return captivated local audiences.
Merkle returns three months after surgery at the Spanish Masters in Madrid in March against none other than French legend Brice Leverdez. Although Merkle emerged victorious from their encounter, she was forced to withdraw from her next match due to a sore leg, marking a temporary setback in her run.
Undeterred by the challenge, Merkle reached the quarter-finals of the Mexico International and, more recently, the Denmark Masters. Now, the time has come to show off his home prowess at the Challenge International de Nantes.
In excellent form throughout the tournament, the Frenchman qualified for the final with victories over solid opponents such as the Dutchman Mark Caljouw and the Indian Sameer Verma. In the final battle, Merkle faced young Indonesian talent Jason Christ Alexander. The Frenchman took an outright victory, 21-18, 21-16.
Arnaud Merkle took to Instagram to express his emotions, stating.
“So many emotions, [itu] difficult to describe the feeling of triumphing in front of the French public after six complicated months, hours of work, agony and doubt. I’m finally back on the top step of the podium.”
Vestergaard and Busch won their third title of the year
After a near-miss at home at the Danish Masters, Mads Vestergaard and Christine Busch were hungry for gold at the Nantes International Challenge a week later.
The semi-final saw a fierce clash between their compatriots as Vestergaard and Busch took on fellow Danes Jesper Toft and Clara Graversen. In an intense battle, Vestergaard and Busch emerged victorious, securing their place in the final.
Their opponents in the final battle were Indians Sai Pratheek.K and Tanisha Crasto, whom Vestergaard and Busch had won in back-to-back matches in the Denmark Masters quarter-finals a week earlier.
However, the Indian duo pushed Denmark into a thrilling three-game encounter. Although their opponents won the opener, Vestergaard and Busch fought back and won 14-21, 21-14, 21-17, to claim their third title of the year.
