Badminton News: Young Anupama Upadhyaya has become the second only Indian badminton player in the women’s under-19 singles category to claim the top spot in the latest BWF Junior Rankings.
The 17-year-old from Panchkula, who won international youth titles in Uganda and Poland earlier this year, replaced fellow Indian Tasnim Mir in the top spot in a BWF statement on Tuesday.
He jumped two places to take pole position with 18,060 points in 18 tournaments and is one of four young Indian players to feature in the top 10 of the junior rankings.
Three other Indian badminton players in the Top 10 are Tasnim Mir (number 2) and two 14-year-olds, Anwesha Gowda (number 6) and Unnati Hooda (number 9).
Overall, Anupama is the sixth Indian badminton player to top the junior rankings.
In the temple singles sector, Aditya Joshi (2014), Siril Verma (2016), Lakshya Sen Sankar Muthusamy Subramanian who became world No. 1 last month.
Anupama Upadhyaya recently broke the Top 100 Senior Women’s Singles chart and is currently ranked 63rd in the world.
A product of the Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy, Anupama impressed this year by qualifying for the semi-finals of the Syed Modi International Super 300 last January, before appearing in the quarter-finals of the Orleans Open, the Super100 event .
The Indian player is currently preparing for the Junior World Championships scheduled in Santander, Spain from October 17-31.
