An Olympic sport in which India is better than the great American nation

The United States is the most successful country at the Summer Olympics, winning 1,065 gold medals and leading the all-time medal total. In second place is the (defunct) Soviet Union with less than half as many gold medals (395).

The United States is the powerhouse of the Olympics. Across different sports, the US has won 2,638 medals in its last 28 appearances at the Games. However, while the US dominates many sports, India holds its own and even outdoes them in some games.

Table tennis

Table tennis is a sport in which China dominates, leaving the United States and India to follow and try to replicate what they have accomplished.

India has an edge over the US in this game. India has an infrastructure with dedicated academies to nurture young talent. This focus on grassroots development ensures a constant pipeline of skilled players entering the competitive arena. While the US, while catching up, continues to build its table tennis community.

Although neither the United States nor India have yet won an Olympic medal in singles, India has enjoyed more success in doubles, showcasing promising teamwork and strategic play.

Field hockey

Field hockey is a sport where India is far removed from the United States. India is the undisputed champion of men's field hockey, winning an impressive eight gold medals. This includes a historic six consecutive gold medals at the Olympics between 1928 and 1956. The US men's team, on the other hand, has not yet qualified for the summer games.

The US women's team has competed in several Olympics but has not won a single medal. The Indian women's team, currently ranked 9th in the world, is trying to replicate the success of the men's team. Their consistent performances and improvement in the rankings suggest promising future potential.

Currently, the Indian men's hockey team is ranked seventh in the world, while the women's hockey team is ranked ninth. As for American hockey, the women's team is ranked 13th, while the men's team is ranked 24th.

Badminton

India has a clear advantage over the United States in badminton. India has three medals in badminton, while the United States is yet to reach the Olympic podium.

Indian players like Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu have achieved remarkable success. They have won medals not only at the Olympics but also at prestigious tournaments like the World Championships and the Uber Cup. The United States, despite having promising players like Beiwen Zhang, is yet to reach the same level. Zhang's achievements are mostly limited to regional victories at the Pan American Games.
