TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Police in the state of Texas, USA, arrested a woman suspected of shouting racial slurs at four women India. The incident was captured in a video that has gone viral on social media.
“This incident is a hate crime under Texas law,” police in Plano, Texas, where the incident occurred, said in a statement.
Police added that this incident also met the elements of hate speech under federal law. Law enforcement will work closely with the FBI and the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division to handle the case.
In video of the incident, the suspect is seen shouting racist comments in a parking lot at a group of four Indian women. The attacker, who identified himself as Mexican-American, told the victim to flee to his native country.
“Go back to India, we don’t want you here. I hate you fucking Indians,” the actor says in the video.
The woman’s arrest took place on Thursday, August 25, 2022. Video of the incident a day earlier, Wednesday, August 24, 2022, has gone viral on social media, including in India and the United States.
Police said the woman, Esmeralda Upton, was arrested on one count of assault on the body and one count of threatening terrorism. He was detained with a total fine of 10,000 US dollars or almost the equivalent of 150 million rupees.
One of the Indian women, Rani Banerjee, said she and three friends had just finished dining at a restaurant when the woman stopped them in the parking lot.
“Suddenly we heard this woman yelling at us and starting to approach us. We were shocked by the racial slurs she used and her aggressive attitude,” Banerjee told the website. ABC News.
Banerjee recorded the incident with his phone. The video also shows Upton punching the women. “What was really scary was that he got really close and not only attacked us verbally, but started attacking us physically. He started hitting me,” Banerjee said.
