Apple continued his disengagement strategy (eventually fast enough) from supply chain China. In October 2022, rumors circulated that the Cupertino company had decided to manufacture certain models of AirPods and Beats headphones in India, a decision which was immediately followed by effect: according to Bloomberg, the plastic shells of the AirPods are now made by Indian suppliers Jabil. After leaving the production line, these components are then sent to China and Vietnam for the assembly stage. This is the first time that AirPods components have been made in India.
Apart from AirPods, many iPhone models are already produced in India (5% of global iPhone production by volume) and Apple plans to move iPad production to that country. Eventually, 30 to 50% of the overall volume of Apple devices produced each year will leave India or Vietnam factories, enough to protect ourselves, at least in part, from a major trade crisis between China and the United States (or China’s invasion of Taiwan).
