India squandered a 2-1 lead in the first half to lose 2-4 to Iraq in their opening match.

“We saw Australia’s game against Kuwait last night, and of course they are a very good team. They are the favorites to dominate the group, and we have to do our best against them,” said head coach Shanmugam Venkatesh.

India will rely heavily on the duo of Gurkirat Singh and Taison Singh. Gurkirat scored one goal and set up another in their loss to Iraq.

“In other words, if we stick together as a team and invest in difficult pitches, we can get results against them too,” added Venkatesh.

Australia started their campaign by beating hosts Kuwait 4-1 and topped the standings with Iraq.

India and Kuwait finished third and fourth respectively.

“The boys did well in the game, and I’m quite happy with how they fought until the end,” said Venkatesh.
