An 18-year-old man was attacked and eaten by several lions in India as he was walking home from work. Rare attack.
The tragedy occurred in the state of Gujarat (Amreli district), in northeastern India. While returning home with his family, an 18-year-old farm worker was attacked at around 6pm on Saturday 23 July by a lion and an 8-year-old lioness while walking in Nani Dhari village, according to Indian Express.
The lion and lioness suddenly emerged from the bushes by the river in the village. The lion attacked him from behind and started dragging him to a nearby mango grove. The lioness also caught the ‘worker’., died on the spot newspaper reports. Family members can do nothing, as help arrives quickly on the spot: “We were only able to find body parts of the victim, indicating that the lion had eaten it.”
The lions were appeased and the lioness was caged, they were taken to Ambardi Safari Park for observation. They came from the Gir forest. The mating period is one of the reasons put forward to explain the aggressive attacks of the two big cats. “Maybe they attacked the worker, seeing it as a nuisance. But lions eating human body parts after attacking them is very unusual.”
The incident follows a lioness attack in a nearby village a week earlier, wounding six people and, in early July, a leopard attack in the same district of Amreli on an elderly blind woman (80) who died of her injuries.
