Universal +: what we know about this new streaming platform announced in France at the end of 2022

Before the end of the year, France will have a new American subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) platform called Universal+, American media group NBCUniversal announced on Monday.

This platform will unify access to Syfy, 13ème RUE, E! and Dreamworks, NBCUniversal International Networks & Direct-To-Consume, a subsidiary of NBCUniversal, said in a statement.

“Further information about the non-exclusive distribution and launch of Universal+ in France, currently scheduled for late 2022, will be announced in the coming months,” the company added.

Already in several regions of the world

The platform, which will primarily compete with Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV+ or Netflix, “available currently in Spain, Latin America (specifically Brazil), India and Africa”, was also specified.

This will bring together the channels and content of 13ème RUE, SYFY, E! in one place, but also the new Dreamworks channel, under the same name as the film and animation series production company known in particular for “Madagascar”, “Kung-fu Panda”, “Shrek” or “Dragon”.

The channel “will also be available for the first time in France linearly (traditional broadcasting in real time, editor’s note) and non-linearly (on request, editor’s note) through Universal +”.

According to the group’s data, “this launch expands DreamWorks’ presence to 43 regions”, which are “accessible to 35 million households in Asia-Pacific, Middle East, Africa, Netherlands, Spain, Brazil, Chile and Mexico”.

Also coming at the end of the year in France, is the Paramount+ offering, which will be distributed by the Canal+ group.
