Twitter Inc. laid off almost all of its employees in India or to be precise more than 90% of its employees employed in India. It’s part of a global layoff plan ordered by its new owner, Elon Musk.
Citing Bloomberg, Tuesday (8/11/2022) the company currently employed more than 200 people in India before the layoffs. Now the number of employees is estimated at only a dozen employees.
Around 70% of India’s layoffs are from merchandise and engineering teams working on assignments around the world. Positions are also declining in areas such as marketing, public policy and corporate communications.
Headquarter Twitter the San Francisco and California-based company also cut its global workforce by about half, or about 3,700 employees. Twitter India’s head office is located in New Delhi, the financial capital of Mumbai and Bangalore (the tech hub of southern India).
According to reports, India is a major growth engine for global internet service providers such as TwitterMeta Platforms Inc. and Google Alphabet Inc. by tapping into a potentially large new pool of online users.
However, the company is also subject to increasingly strict content regulations aimed at reining in the country’s big tech companies. It is estimated that the company today only has around 3,700 employees worldwide.
