Badminton News: Tasnim Mir, who won the Chattisgarh International Challenge badminton tournament last week, hopes to emulate Indian badminton stars PV Sindhu as well as Saina Nehwal in professional competition.

The Gujarat-born commuter is ready for the 2022 National Olympics and wants to enjoy the joy of performing with the support of the local crowd as he takes center stage.

Tasnim Mir, former World Junior No. 1, is now ranked 113 in the BWF Senior World Rankings and knows it is a huge task to emulate Sindhu and Saina and hopes to achieve his dream soon.

The 17-year-old from Mehsana, Gujarat has risen to the top of the BWF World Junior Rankings, a feat that Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu couldn’t achieve.

She is inspired by Olympic medalists but wants to chart her own course.

“I idolize them (Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu). They are role models for all young players. They are outstanding performers on the world stage and have given Indian women’s badminton a huge boost. We all dream of emulating them,” he said during some media interaction.

Tasnim admitted that he was very aware that success in the higher ranks would present different challenges. He also decided to avoid all social media in his quest to improve his game at senior level.

“It was a very good feeling when I became No. 1 in the U19 world rankings. It’s a great achievement. To repeat that at the higher ranks would be a different ballgame. I have to improve,” did he declare.

Tasnim Mir says he is working on his fitness and hopes to keep up with the demands of the sport. Having set a goal of breaking into the top 50, Tasnim Mir knew what to do to get there.

“I have to work on my physical condition. I work on my rally and my endurance because I realize that Asian players are very good in rally, in power and in speed. The game got faster and we had to play quick rallies. My goal is to improve my ranking,” he said.

“My goal is to be in the top 50 so I can play in the biggest international tournaments. I need to be consistent with my game to achieve that goal and then progress to be in the top 20 in the world.”

The Gujarat badminton player said the International Challenge tournament helps players like him to have a good experience.

“With some good players from Japan, Thailand and China taking part in this tournament, it gives us the necessary experience and the opportunity to move up the rankings,” Tasnim Mir concluded.
