Badminton News: At a time when the world of badminton is witnessing the rapid rise of Indian players at multiple levels of play, youngster Maisnam Meiraba Luwang from Manipur is slowly progressing away from the limelight. And the one who gave him the way was none other than his father.

Maisnam Romesh Luwang, a former national level badminton player who is currently linked with Manipur’s sports department as head coach, was the one who pushed Meiraba to return to the game from the age of three.

“I coached him until he was under 13. Then he was selected for Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy and he has been there since 2013,” said Romesh from Raipur where Meiraba will compete in the CM Trophy. India International Challenge.

He entered the tournament having recently won the Maha Metro International Challenge in Nagpur where he defeated 2nd seed Mithun Manjunath in the final. It was his second title this year and fourth overall in the senior category. However, he suffered a minor injury and is racing against time to be fit for the Raipur tournament.

But with his father around, he wasn’t too worried. “It was very comforting and helpful to have him with me during the tournament. I can only focus on my game while he takes care of others,” said Meiraba Luwang, who reached No. 2 in the world. in the junior ranking.

From helping Meiraba get the right kind of food after her game to making sure she gets enough sleep before her game day, Romesh takes care of it all.

“Not only the performance of the players on the pitch, but the overall management of the players is very important these days. I did my best so that he could play with a free spirit,” he said.

Apart from that, he also played a major role in his training during the tournament. He analyzes his game as well as his opponents.

“When my father explained to me, I understood things easily because he had already experienced the same situation,” added Meiraba.

Meiraba’s father also gives him physical training whenever he is in Imphal where the average height is around 786m.

“Because our country is located quite above sea level, it helps the players there to develop their stamina. This is one of the reasons why players from our state have done so well in various sports over the years.”

Despite the gradual success, Meiraba Luwang and her father are well aware that they still have a long way to go.

“His stroke needs to improve and he needs to improve physically,” Romesh said.

But Romesh is more than happy that his son is in the top 100 of the Senior World Rankings which will help him get straight into Super Series events which will further help him play against players more often. better ranked.

Last month his world ranking was 90 while this month he reached a career high of 79 and with a number of events to come he will have a chance to climb higher in the rankings.

After the Raipur event, Meiraba Luwang will play in the Vietnam Open where he gets a bye in the first round. This is a Super 100 event and will run from September 27 to October 2. Then he will participate in Gujarat National Games.

While it’s certainly tough to play in back-to-back events, it will test the mettle of a down-to-earth 19-year-old who just wants to grow as a player.
