This large animal is known to be on the brink of extinction. The number of Javan rhinos is known to be only about 50-60 individuals and only in Ujung Kulon National Park.
Retrieved from junglekita.com, expert staff of the Ujung Kulon National Park Rhino Protection Unit, Daryan said that in 1937, the one-horned rhino or Javan rhino was found living in the Tasikmalaya area . But now the area inhabited by this species is only in Ujung Kulon National Park, Banten.
This type of rhino generally lives in tropical forest areas which are characterized by dense canopy cover and adequate water supply in the forest zone. The altitude where it lives is usually above 3,000 meters above sea level and is strongly influenced by the presence of food.
Based on data from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List in 2008, the one-horned rhinoceros is included in the faunal group with Critically Endangered status, which means that the population of this animal is very critical and almost extinct, even the number of individuals is only about 46-66 individuals.
Besides being found in Indonesia, the one-horned rhinoceros has also been found in India, Myanmar, and Vietnam. However, after Vietnam declared this body extinct in their country, Indonesia is now the only country that has a population of Rhinoceros sondaicus.
Since 1931, the one-horned rhinoceros has had the status of a protected animal in Indonesia. Then, in 1992, the southwestern region of the island of Java which is the habitat of this animal was designated as part of the Ujung Kulon National Park. Since then, the national park has become the only habitat of the one-horned rhinoceros.
