Besides being found in Indonesia, the one-horned rhinoceros has also been found in India, Myanmar, and Vietnam. However, after Vietnam declared this body extinct in their country, Indonesia is now the only country that has a population of Rhinoceros sondaicus.

Since 1931, the one-horned rhinoceros has had the status of a protected animal in Indonesia. Then, in 1992, the southwestern region of the island of Java which is the habitat of this animal was designated as part of the Ujung Kulon National Park. Since then, the national park has become the only habitat of the one-horned rhinoceros.
